The volume data generated in a CT scan is perfectly suited to generate STL surface models for a variety of applications. STL extraction is performed by selecting a material inside the object and generating a triangulated mesh representing the surface of the selected material.
Surface models are used for various means. Finite element analysis based on the surface model allows to simulate the thermal or mechanical properties of the material. Additionally, the model can be used for comparison with existing CAD data or retrieval of missing CAD data. Finally, surface models are used for real time and light weight 3D visualization.
